GQ- MAGAZINE ANNOTATIONS

GQ MAGAZINE Main image – head and shoulders shot, reveals enough detail to see his facial expressions. This magazine also uses direct eye contact, this allows the target audience to be attracted by his sly look. "GQ" - the masthead is in a bold and large sans serif font, the "q" overlaps the "g". The colours used are orange and white. The colour orange connotes mystery in juxtaposition to the colour white giving connotations of purity, innocence. However, orange could connote success which links in with the clothing James is wearing -the denotation of a formal suit connoting change and being professional. "Look smart, live smart" is the slogan of this magazine, this is shown by the way James is dressed in the image used. It connotes that fashion is everyday life. The purpose of this is to attract and for promotion purposes so that the audience can purchase it.

DAILY MIRROR -"EU BORIS" RESPONSE

The Daily Mirror is a red top tabloid, whereas the Daily Telegraph is quality press. The red colour in the background of the Daily Mirror connotes dominance, royalty, pride as it is a British colour. The sans serif font and body text of the masthead connotes how popular the newspaper is as it is bold; the “M” is larger than the rest of the typography connoting it is the main newspaper read. This links in with Roland Berthes theory as he studied semiology and the significance of symbols and signs. The significance of the lexis of “Daily” above “Mirror” connotes that the newspaper is mirroring the news from day to day into a “mirror”. Also, the “D” is the dot on the “I” of “Mirror”. The Daily Mirror is a Trinity Mirror as it is regulated and represented through the Labour party whereas, the Daily Telegraph is represented through the Conservatives and the Press Holdings institution – broadsheet newspaper. Research - Vogue: Vogue is a fashion and lifestyle magazine covering many topics including fashion, beauty, culture, living, and runway. Vogue - a weekly newspaper in 1892 in the United States, it became a monthly publication years later. ANALYSIS OF MAGAZINE FRONT COVER: A sans serif font is being used for the typography of the masthead and the rest of the wording. The masthead is large and bold on the front cover in a gold font. This connotes that this magazine is pricy as gold is a prestige and a colour of luxury. The masthead in French “Vogue” means trend. The well known BeyoncĂ© (music artist) on the front cover – to attract a target audience preferably teenagers to middle age people. It would attract a larger audience than a model would attract. The month of the issues release is under the “E” of the masthead “SEP”. This connotes it is a monthly magazine.

Emeli Sande’s music video was released on the 14 th April 2011. The video is based in East London where Emeli grew up. Emeli sings out to God using a medium shot focusing upwards pleading to erase all her sins but also the sins in society as she lives in East London. However, Emeli doesn’t believe in God but still sings “oh heaven” repetitively. This connotes that she is preaching out to God for forgiveness. The music video is made to look archaic, retro and vintage through the use monochrome imagery . The music video denotes a topless man sitting on a green field with black wings probably angel wings as it relates to Heaven painted on his back. The type of shot being used is the over the shoulder shot which connotes a desperate and in need feeling but it could also be intimidating as his wings haven’t opened and been freed (society alone as individuals not having a voice).
